Baby Proofing Checklist: Room-by-Room Safety Guide

A practical room-by-room baby proofing checklist covering child safety locks, corner protectors, baby gate setup, oven locks, and the order that keeps you from redoing work.

Quick answer

Baby proof one room at a time, starting with the spaces where your baby spends the most unsupervised minutes: the nursery, then the bathroom, kitchen, and stairs. Anchor furniture, cover outlets, install cabinet locks and a toilet lock, add corner protectors to low tables, and fit a hardware-mounted baby gate at the top of stairs. Buy a home baby proofing kit first so you are not making three separate trips for outlet plugs, straps, and latches.

Before you start: crawl the room at your baby's eye level

Get on your hands and knees in each room and look at what is within reach. This is the single fastest way to spot dangling cords, low shelf edges, pet bowls, and cabinet doors your baby can pull open. Check the floor too: small objects that fit through a toilet paper tube are choking hazards and should be picked up before you install anything.

Nursery and bedroom

Anchor dressers, bookshelves, and changing tables to the wall with anti-tip straps, even if the furniture feels heavy. Keep the crib clear of cords, blinds, and anything your baby can grab and pull. Once your baby starts pulling to stand, drop the mattress to the lowest setting and remove bumper pads.

  • Anti-tip straps on every tall piece of furniture
  • Outlet covers on all accessible sockets
  • Cord shorteners or cord concealers on lamps and monitors
  • Door knob covers if the nursery door opens outward

Bathroom

The bathroom is the highest-risk room per square foot. Install a toilet lock so the lid cannot be lifted, and keep the bathroom door closed with a door knob cover or a self-latching hook. Store medications, razors, and cleaning supplies in a locked cabinet, not just a high shelf, because climbing starts earlier than most parents expect.

  • Toilet lock on every toilet
  • Non-slip mat inside and outside the tub
  • Anti-scald setting on the water heater (below 120°F / 49°C)
  • Cabinet locks on under-sink storage

Kitchen

Put child safety locks on the cabinets and drawers your baby can reach, especially the ones holding knives, cleaning products, and plastic bags. An oven lock safety device keeps the oven door from being pulled open, and stove knob covers stop small hands from turning on burners. Keep hot drinks and pot handles turned toward the back of the counter.

  • Oven lock or oven door strap
  • Stove knob covers
  • Fridge latch if your baby can open it
  • Cabinet and drawer latches on low storage

Living room and stairs

Pad the sharp corners of coffee tables, TV stands, and fireplace hearths with corner protectors, and secure the TV to the wall or a sturdy stand. For stairs, use a hardware-mounted baby gate at the top and a pressure-mounted gate at the bottom, since a pressure gate at the top can give way under a push. Keep stairs clear of toys and laundry.

  • Corner protectors on low, hard-edged furniture
  • Hardware-mounted gate at the top of stairs
  • Pressure-mounted gate at the bottom of stairs
  • Fireplace hearth padding if the hearth is raised

Baby proofing steps in order

  1. 1. Crawl each room at your baby's height: Get low and note every reachable hazard: cords, low shelves, pet bowls, small objects, and cabinet doors that open easily. Checkpoint: if you can reach it from your knees, your baby can reach it from theirs.
  2. 2. Anchor furniture and TVs: Use anti-tip straps on dressers, bookshelves, and TV stands. This is the step most parents skip because the furniture feels stable, but tipping happens when a baby pulls up or climbs. Checkpoint: push the top of each piece firmly; it should not move more than an inch.
  3. 3. Install outlet covers and cord management: Place outlet plugs in every accessible socket and shorten or conceal lamp and monitor cords. Avoid daisy-chaining power strips where a baby can pull them. Checkpoint: no cord should dangle lower than your baby's shoulder height when standing.
  4. 4. Add child safety locks to cabinets and drawers: Focus on kitchen and bathroom storage holding cleaners, medications, knives, and plastic bags. Magnetic locks are easier to use daily than adhesive straps, which can weaken over time. Checkpoint: test each lock by pulling firmly; if it opens with a light tug, reposition it.
  5. 5. Install corner protectors on low furniture: Clean the surface, peel the backing, and press each protector firmly for 30 seconds. Avoid placing them on surfaces that get direct sun or heat, which can soften the adhesive. Checkpoint: after 24 hours, try to wiggle the protector; if it shifts, remove and reapply with fresh adhesive.
  6. 6. Set up baby gates at stairs and doorways: Use a hardware-mounted gate at the top of stairs and a pressure-mounted gate at the bottom. Measure the opening before buying, and never use a pressure gate at the top of stairs. Checkpoint: the gate should latch securely with one hand and not swing open when pushed.
  7. 7. Lock the oven and secure stove knobs: Fit an oven lock or strap so the door cannot be pulled open, and add stove knob covers. Keep pot handles turned inward and never leave a hot pan unattended. Checkpoint: with the oven lock engaged, pull the door handle firmly; it should not open.
